QS’s 2021 World University Rankings® comprise 26 of Canada’s best universities, each of which was evaluated on a variety of criteria, including its academic & employer reputations, its effect on research, and more.
Here are Canada’s top 10 universities, along with a breakdown of how the country’s other 16 higher education institutions fared.
10. University of Calgary
Although it has dropped 13 spots from last year’s ranking, still the University of Calgary is included in Canada’s top 10 universities. The university is ranked 246th in the world, with a combined score of 212th in the international faculty indicator.
In 1944, the University of Calgary was established as a section of the University of Alberta in Calgary. Since that time, the university has developed into an independent institution, and it now encompasses a total of more than 33,000 graduate and undergraduate students throughout its five campuses.
9. Queen’s University
Queen’s University, located in Kingston, Ontario, has dropped 7 places in the world rankings to joint 246th this year. The university ranks 99th in the world in terms of employer reputation, which is a remarkable achievement.
91% of Queen’s grads find work within six months of graduating with over 24,000 pupils.
8. Western University
For the first time in its history, Western University has moved up in the world university rankings, rising to 203rd place. Western University, which is one of Canada’s leading research institutions, was founded in 1878 and has more than 38,000 students from almost 121 countries.
The number of citations per faculty member and per employer’s reputation speaks well of the university’s standing. There are a lot of international students from Germany, France, India, Australia, and many more.

7. University of Waterloo
The University of Waterloo improved its ranking by 7 spots in the international rankings this year, but it is still in 7th rank in Canada. The University of Waterloo in 2021, was placed in 166th position in the global rankings and 85th place in the employer reputation indicator.
The university was founded in 1956 & has three campuses. It is a member of the U15 research organization.
6. McMaster University
This year, McMaster University dropped four places in the ranks to 144th in the ranking of international universities. McMaster University ranks 83rd in the world in the international faculty indicator.

5. University of Alberta
The University of Alberta dropped six spots to 119th place this year. In total, the University of Alberta has 40,000 students and four campuses spread across the province. The indicator of the international faculty for the University of Alberta, it is the best in the world.
4. Université de Montréal
Université de Montréal (University of Montreal) has overtaken the University of Alberta to claim 4th place in the top 10 universities of Canada this year. Founded in 1878, the University of Montreal is a French-language, public research university with about 67,350 undergraduate and graduate students, which also includes 10,000 students from other countries.

3. University of British Columbia
In the third position is the University of British Columbia, which has risen six places this year to 45th in the world and third in Canada. The University of British Columbia is ranked 28th worldwide for its academic reputation and aspires to embrace new ideas and question the existing quo.
2. McGill University
McGill University, in Montreal, has moved up four spots this year to equal 31st in the world rankings to maintain its position as Canada’s second-best university.
Twelve Nobel laureates, 145 Rhodes scholars, and Canada’s current PM, Justin Trudeau, are all graduates of McGill University.
1. University of Toronto
The University of Toronto is Canada’s top university once again this year, ranking 25th in the world. As a result of this year’s rankings, the university has risen four places in the overall rankings and ranks 15th in the world for academic reputation.
