The University of Auckland maintains its position as the best university in New Zealand for the year 2021, placing 81st in the world despite competition from seven other universities in the country.

The QS World University Rankings 2021 were published last year and ranked the top universities in the world on the basis of six main metrics, including employer reputation, academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, foreign faculty and students, and citations per faculty.

University of Auckland

For the second consecutive year, New Zealand’s University of Auckland has been ranked first in the country, placing it 81st in the world this year and achieving its best academic reputation score.

According to QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, which tallied 42,759 students for 2018 enrollment, this institution, which is the largest in the country, is ranked in the top 50 worldwide for 13 different subject categories.

University of Otago

The University of Otago ranked 184th in the world in 2021, maintains its second-place position in New Zealand, and ranks 31st in the world for its percentage of international faculty members.

Located mostly in Dunedin on the South Island, it is New Zealand’s oldest university and was founded in 1869. Around 21,240 students, including 2,972 students from outside New Zealand, are enrolled at the university as of 2013.

Auckland University of Technology

As the original Auckland Technical School, Auckland University of Technology (AUT) was established in 1895 and currently holds the 23rd-best global ranking for the percentage of international students among New Zealand’s university system institutions.

University of Canterbury

The New Zealand’s University of Canterbury dropped 44 places this year to rank joint 270th, located in Christchurch on the South Island.

In 1873, it was created as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand, and it has been a part of the university ever since. The school’s student body has grown to almost 17,300.

Victoria University of Wellington

As the country’s third-best university, Victoria University of Wellington holds a tie for 223rd place in the world for the percentage of its faculty who are international, the indicator for which it ranks 76th best.

According to the most recent QS World University Rankings by Subject, it ranks 20th in library studies and 50th in hospitality and leisure management.

Massey University

As of this year, Massey has moved up 11 places to 272nd in the world, overtaking the University of Waikato to become New Zealand’s fifth-ranked university.

At Palmerton North on the North Island, Massey University is the only educational institution that offers degrees in aviation, dispute resolution, veterinarian medicine, and nanoscience.

University of Waikato

There has been a 100-place decline in the international rankings for the University of Waikato this year. University research and facilities are internationally recognized in a wide range of subjects, and 15 of the university’s degree programs are ranked and recognized by QS.

The main campus is in Hamilton, New Zealand’s North Island, on 65 acres of parkland. There is also a campus in Tauranga.

Lincoln University

As of 2021, Lincoln University will be ranked along with the University of Canterbury as an independent institution. Lincoln University was formally separated from the University of Canterbury in 1990.

It ranks in the top 100 for agriculture and forestry in the most recent QS World University Rankings by Subject, along with AUT, for its high proportion of international students.
